The cell cycle Mitosis is only one section of the life cycle of a cell. Interphase is the main part of the cell cycle. This is where DNA is replicated.
KEY CONCEPT Cells divide during mitosis and cytokinesis.
What do they do? Stages What’s Going on? What is It?

CELL DIVISION OBJECTIVES: Describe the main events of the cell cycle.
Mitosis: Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a daughter cell receives the same number of identical chromosomes as the parent cell. Mitosis is necessary.

Presentation transcript:

Looking at Mitosis in an Onion Root Tip

What types of things do you expect to see in Interphase? DNA is in the form of long strands Nuclear membrane is clearly visible No spindle

What types of things do you expect to see in Prophase? DNA condensed into chromosomes Nuclear membrane will be dissolving Spindle is starting to form

What types of things do you expect to see in Metaphase? Chromosomes lining up in the middle Spindle visible

What types of things do you expect to see in Anaphase? Sister Chromatids being pulled away from the center to opposite sides of the cell

What types of things do you expect to see in Telophase? Chromosomes should be at opposite ends of cell May see two new nuclear membranes forming

Cytokinesis Cell Wall will begin to form between two new plant cells Nuclear mebrane will be fully formed Chromosomes may start to unwind into long strands of DNA

Which phases do you see?
