Pennies to Silver and Gold

Pennies to Silver and Gold Materials Safety Glasses Gloves Tongs Glass Beakers Electric Burner Penny 100 mL NaOH solution (50mL per 1000 mL H2O) 1/8 tsp Pixie Dust (Zinc powder)

Pennies to Silver and Gold Observations 1: What year is your penny? Where was it minted? Mass of your penny? Any other identifiable characteristics:

Pennies to Silver and Gold Procedure Pour 100 mL of NaOH solution into a beaker Bring to a boil on the Electric Burner Add 1/8 tsp Pixie dust into the beaker Place pennies into the beaker Boil 4 minutes Remove beaker from the burner Remove pennies Rinse the pennies

Pennies to Silver and Gold Observations 2 : What happened to the pennies? What is the mass of the penny now? Is this a physical or chemical change?

Pennies to Silver and Gold Procedure Give Mr. Sherman your silver penny Apply heat to the silver penny

Pennies to Silver and Gold Observations 3: What happened to the pennies? What is the mass of the penny? Is this a physical or chemical change?
