Reformation

Background: Martin Luther and Indulgences Martin Luther opposed the selling of indulgences by the Catholic Church. The selling of indulgences allowed people to “buy” their redemption from sin. Luther’s challenge of the pope’s authority led to the division of the Catholic Church and indirectly contributed to the growth of democracy.
