Starter In less then 20 words, sum up what the poem The Manhunt is about

LO: To examine the structure of The Manhunt All will – contribute to class discussion and make some relevant comments Most will – have a clear understanding of how structure can add further meaning to the poem and be able to write confidently about this Some will – begin to consider original ideas for how the structure adds further meaning to the poem.

Structure Structure What do we look for when we examine the structure of a poem? The use of stanzas (verses) Rhythm and rhyme The order of events in the poem How sentences are formed across lines.

The Manhunt is structured into 13 couplets (two lines per stanza) In order to fully appreciate the order of events and what this tells you about further meaning in the poem, you will storyboard The Manhunt. For each couplet, do your best to draw what you understand to be happening in the couplet. Write the stanza you have illustrated in the box above.

After the first phase, After passionate nights and intimate days, only then would he let me trace the frozen river which ran through his face, Try to write/ copy poem exactly how you see it, including correct punctuation and line length.

Let’s discuss! What does each couplet describe? Why is it set out in this way? What does it suggest about the journey the wife takes? The first and final lines of the poem are significant. How does it begin? How does it end? What does this suggest?

Rhyme scheme A After the first phase, A after passionate nights and intimate days, B only then would he let me trace B the frozen river which ran through his face, C only then would he let me explore C the blown hinge of his lower jaw,

How does the structure of The Manhunt add to the meaning of the poem? You should discuss: What each couplet describes and what this reveals to the reader. The rhyme scheme and what effect this has. The order of events: how the poem starts and how the poem ends - what does this reveal about their relationship?
