ADD: osnapitzswamir on Snapchat

Dominant Effect Narayan demonstrates an immediate shift in Raju’s character from vain to altruistic to create a pious mood, as Raju transcends his material attachments.

Raju at the Beginning of the Chapter “ Raju was taken aback at still being addressed as Swami… ‘He will not leave me alone,’ Raju thought with resignation.” (184-185). “Raju almost glared at him [Velan]. This single man was responsible for his present plight.” (188).

Review - Dharma Duty that maintains order in the universe. Think- What is Raju’s duty as a “Swami”? Has he been fulfilling this duty?

Dharma Re-characterizes Raju Raju fulfills his duty as a Swami and makes a sacrifice for the people. He decides to “make an earnest effort” to do the right thing, “for the first time in his life” (189).

Review - Reincarnation A soul begins life again in a new body after the death of the previous body Narayan alludes to the theme of Hindu reincarnation at the end of the chapter, as Raju loses his sensation and connection to his own body.

Reincarnation into a Swami “Lack of food gave him [Raju] a peculiar floating feeling” (189). Raju is “Just addressed ‘Swamiji’ that was all” (190). “Raju could not walk...they held him as if he were a baby” (196).

Rationale Each day of his fast is a chronicle in his life. The Snap-Story function of snapchat allows us to follow Raju through the days of his fast The story shows pictures from Raju’s point-of-view

Rationale (cont) A “story” on Snapchat is removed after a day, just as Raju changes with each day of the fast The transient nature of snapchat allows us to see how Raju’s days change over the course of his fast SWAMI RAJU

Discussion Questions Compare and Contrast Velan and Mrs. Ramsay and the authors’ functions for each character in their novels.

To what extent did Velan Influence Raju to complete the fast? Discussion Questions To what extent did Velan Influence Raju to complete the fast? How does this influence play a role in Pride and Prejudice? (Darcy, Eliza, Mr./Mrs. Bennet)

Discussion Questions What happens at the end of the novel? Why does Narayan leave the ending ambiguous?

Discussion Questions What are the meanings of "guide" in the novel? How does the term become layered with various meanings as Raju’s character develops?

Exit Slip Each table group needs to help Raju get through all 12 days of fasting by correctly answering the assigned questions. The first group to finish will successfully help Raju break his fast on time. Good luck, and do not let Swami Raju die!

Save Swami Raju! DAY 1-2: Add osnapitzswamir on Snapchat and send us a snap of how ecstatic Raju is to get through and break his fast! Day 3-4: True or False: Raju felt as if he had a lot of privacy and as a result, he was able to get things done in seclusion without an issue. Day 5-6: What did Raju wish for Velan earlier on during their journey? (Hint: Crocodile [pg.188]) Day 7-8: Was Raju ever compassionate toward Velan? Did this prompt him to “chase away all thought of food?” (Narayan 188). Day 9-11: How does Raju know it is raining in the hills? (Hint: He feels it in his…) DAY 12: Who said this? “How many good sentiments and philosophies you have gathered in that head of yours, sir!” (Narayan 18_).
