Outline What is this Event? What are the objectives? What’s changed since it was last run? Important details Questions? 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute

What is Scrambler? Event Description: Competitors must design, build, and test a mechanical device, which uses the energy from a falling mass to transport an egg along a straight track as quickly as possible and stop as close to the center of a terminal barrier without breaking the egg. Most ideal situation is for Scrambler to go straight center and touch the wall without breaking the egg as quickly as possible Scrambler = egg transport + mass Mass does not need to travel with the egg transport 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute

California Science Olympiad Summer Institute What’s new? Basically everything. Event was last run in 2009 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute

Introduction of Photogates To accommodate the photogates, new requirements for Scrambler and track. Scramblers must have a vertical dowel for timing purposes (2.e) Track may or may not have photogates (3.e) Timing will begin at 0.20m and end at 8.20m (4.j) Scramblers will be able to ramp up to max velocity and decelerate without being penalized on time You want your Scrambler to pass the 8.20m and stay in the lane, timing and score (4.m and 4.n)) 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute

California Science Olympiad Summer Institute Brand New Backstop Backstop details listed in 2.e Egg must rest on wooden dowels Backstop includes the vertical dowel 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute

California Science Olympiad Summer Institute Starting Scrambler Competitors must start their Scrambler using #2 pencils (2.g) New standard for starting vehicular events The Scrambler MUST remain in place before launch, no holding (4.h) 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute

Important details Scrambler device needs to be impounded, certain exceptions listed in 4.a Competitors will select their egg, however, they will only be allowed one egg per team (2.f) If the egg breaks, you are done. Go conservative 1st run and all out on 2nd run (4.o) 12/7/2018 California Science Olympiad Summer Institute
