LEAVING CERT PHYSICAL EDUCATION September 2018 Coolmine Community School

Leaving Certificate Physical Education September 2018 369 schools applied 80 schools were selected, including Coolmine These schools are part of phase 1, pilot scheme 1 class of 24 (max) students will be taken through the 2 year pilot scheme 1 teacher will take them through

Initial thoughts from students… “I wish LCPE came out last year so we could’ve chosen it. It would’ve been easy points!” “Miss Byrne, I play football for Shelbourne. I’m picking LCPE and I’m gonna get a H1” Most students have very low expectations of the standard of the course. It is important for them to realise that the level of learning being assessed is equal to all other LC subjects “If you pick LCPE, it means you get 5 lessons of PE a week. Deadly!! I’m definitely picking that!”

Senior Cycle PE If students choose LCPE as a LC Option All students will do ‘Core PE’ for 1 double lesson p/w If students choose LCPE as a LC Option 1 double + 1 double/1 single Or 3 singles 5 Lessons of LCPE p/w (approximately 180 hours over 2 years)

If students choose LCPE as a LC Option 1 double + 1 double/1 single Or 3 singles 5 Lessons of LCPE p/w

LCPE Specification-Aim The aim of Leaving Certificate Physical Education is to develop the learner’s capacity to become an informed, skilled, self-directed and reflective performer in physical education and physical activity in senior cycle and in their future life

Objectives The objectives of Leaving Certificate Physical Education are to develop the learner’s: performance in physical activity ability to reflect on performance in physical activity knowledge and understanding of the factors which influence performance and participation in physical activity appreciation of the benefits of physical activity for lifelong health and wellbeing capacity to undertake different roles in physical activities understanding of the principles underlying ethical participation in physical activity understanding of the role of physical activity and sport in the social and cultural life of Ireland

Structure Learners learn about these different theoretical perspectives through 3 different physical activities

Choose 1 for their final assessment Students will study 3 activities – each from a different area Athletics/Artistic & aesthetic/Adventure activities/Games/Aquatics/Personal exercise & Fitness Choose 1 for their final assessment

Assessment For the performance assessment, learners choose one of the three selected physical activities being studied by their class.  They will be assessed in a variety of contexts, including personal performance, fully competitive and/or conditioned practices. The performance is captured digitally by the learner, in sessions designed to capture their best personal performance. For the project, learners can choose either a performer or coach/choreographer role. Students then apply their learning to develop their personal performance in their chosen role, and complete a digital project report, covering four sections: Performance analysis, identification of four performance goals, evidence of ongoing training/practice reflection, and a concluding analysis.
