Water, Water Why is it so wonderful?

What Makes Water Unique? Water has the greatest thermal conductivity except for mercury Water can act as either an acid or a base but is neutral

Water has high melting and freezing points

Water is the most universal solvent

Water has the highest surface tension of all liquids except mercury.

Water demonstrates strong capillary action.

The solid form of water—ice—is less dense than the liquid form The solid form of water—ice—is less dense than the liquid form. This means that ice floats.

All three forms of water; ice, liquid water and steam, exist at normal temperatures for earth. It is the ONLY molecule to do so.

Structure of Water Water is made of 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen atoms. H2O

Water is Polar Oxygen is stronger at pulling electrons than Hydrogen is. So, even though they share electrons, Oxygen gets the electrons more of the time. Electrons are negative, so Oxygen becomes slightly negative. Hydrogen becomes slightly positive.

The Water Cycle Fueled by the sun’s energy Condensation Evaporation Precipitation Aquifers, ground water, lakes, streams and the ocean

Aquifers Like underground lakes but Really made of saturated soil rather than pure water How can soil act to filter the water in the aquifer?

What About the Ganges? One of the largest rivers in the world In a very populated area of the world Used for transportation washing manufacturing power religion drinking

Floods: Why so much worry? What properties of water make floods so destructive and their effects so long lasting?
