About John Smith 1580-1631 I. His Life A. 3 Phases 1. Adventurer - soldier - adventurer - slave - pirate

2. Colonist - helped est. Jamestown -served as governor - captured by Indians - able to keep Jmstwn from destruction by laziness of colonists and threats by Indians - seriously injured (1609) & never returned to NW

3. Advocate for Colonization - drew maps of coast - gave advice to new colonists leaving Engl. for NW - wrote promotional material for NW
