Frankenstein Chapter IV By Othello and Desdemona

Summary & Plot Negative image of humanity: Damaging obsession No ethics Egocentric Self centered Uni life and education Summary & Plot

Victor Frankenstein Obsessive Open minded Egocentric Prioritises his work over other people Ambitious Intelligent

Obsession Obsession is painted in a very negative light Victor was obsessive with his whole being about one occupation: “nearly my sole occupation” Animalistic, uncontrolled, savage, unnatural obsession “resistless and almost frantic impulse” “Hurricane” a metaphor for the destructive and powerful nature of his obsession Obsession at the expense of his health, friends, family

Progress and Scientific Discovery Metaphor/symbol for the modern world: how damaging, fast obsessive, egocentric and unethical it is Criticises modern progress Modern discovery is a ‘drug’: “enticement of science”. It can be seen in his slow mental, emotional and physical deterioration

Egocentric and self centred “I alone should be reserved to discover so astonishing a secret” Large price for scientific discovery, still present “tortured the living animal”

Ethical Considerations No ethical considerations present Once he had discovered life, he didn’t consider if he should use it, but how could he use it, “In which should I employ it?” “Tortured the living animal” “Collected bones” Unethical to himself and others “slow fever” “shunned my fellow creature”

Creation Created for the sake of creating: Made the creature of “gigantic stature”, “proportionally large” Created him this way because he could and didn’t think of the consequences: selfish Creation overshadowed by greed and ego “bless (him)”, “owe their being to (him)”
