Extremely labor intensive to grow. First used in Egypt around 1600 BC as a wrapping for mummies. Very high in demand in the 17th century around the world. Only grows in warm climates. Considered the food of the gods. Brought over to the colonies by John Rolfe. Easy to grow, harvest and had a variety of uses. Very profitable but needs the right land and conditions to grow. 1720s most profitable crop in South Carolina. Grown by the slaves as their own food source. The Different parts of the plant had many uses. Used the stalk and leaves for livestock feed, used the cobs to start fires and used the husks to make chairs. Introduced originally by the Spanish.
