Lesson 2 Interaction with EM Energy When you see this, write down notes in packet Lesson 2 Interaction with EM Energy

Incoming Solar Radiation interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere & surface in three ways Reflection: waves bounce off the surface of the material. 2. Refraction: waves are bent and the direction is changed. 3. Absorbed: waves are taken into the material. 4. Scattered: waves bounce off in various directions.

B. Reflection vs. Absorption Color – Dark vs. Light Texture – Rough vs. Smooth

Stay away from the dark side Light vs. Dark Surfaces Stay away from the dark side On a hot summer day when you want to stay cool in the sun, should you wear light or dark color clothing?

Dark – absorbs more energy Light – reflects more energy

Smooth vs. Rough Surfaces

Rough – more surface area - absorbs Smooth – less surface area - reflects

Good absorbers = Good radiators Takes in energy well Gives off energy well

FQ: Put these object in order from best absorber to worst absorber (best reflector) Snow, Sand, Forests, Water, Parking lot Parking lot, Forest, Sand, Water, Snow

Energy travels… High Energy Low Energy C. How is Energy Transferred interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere & surface in three ways Energy travels… High Energy Low Energy Energy will stop transferring when… Energy Becomes Equal Dynamic Equilibrium

Heat Energy Measures how fast molecules are moving Faster particles = higher temps Slower particles = lower temps

All matter radiates energy, unless it is at absolute zero.

Absolute zero = Temperature where all molecules stop moving Mention that ESRT page 13 has the temperature chart for conversions. This was already gone over in the beginning of the year.

Temperature and Energy: How Cold is Cold?

Now that’s cold! Deep outer space = 3°K Coldest temperature in a laboratory = 0.000,000,001 A few billionths of a degree above absolute zero

Methods of Energy Transfer 1) Radiation 2) Conduction 3) Convection

Ex: Sun’s energy reaching the Earth Radiation Transfer of energy through solid, liquid, gas, and vacuum Ex: Sun’s energy reaching the Earth

Conduction Vibrating molecules hit each other transferring energy *** heat transferred through DIRECT CONTACT

Conduction

Convection Caused by different densities in gases or liquids Ex: Atmosphere, Ocean, Asthenosphere

Water cools down & becomes more dense and sinks No heat: Water cools down & becomes more dense and sinks Heat source: Water is heated becomes less dense and rises.

The plates of the lithosphere and convection in the aesthenosphere
