What is Prevent? Prevent is part of the Government’s Counter- Terrorism Strategy The aim of Prevent is to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a duty on schools to safeguard pupils from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the ’Prevent Duty.’

Extremism – Vocal or active opposition to Fundamental British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different. Radicalisation - The process by which a person comes to support terrorism or forms of extremism leading to terrorism.

The UK faces a continuing threat both international and domestic terrorism and violent extremism, which can emerge from any community and can be inspired by a wide range of causes. The current threat from terrorism in the UK can include the exploitation of vulnerable people, including children of all ages. Young people are being recruited into groups promoting hatred, discrimination and sometimes violence. Extremism can take many forms including Far Right/Neo Nazi/White Supremacists, Al Qaeda ideologies, Irish Nationalists and Loyalists parliamentary groups and can be linked to Animal Rights movement.

The Prevent Strategy has 3 elements: Ideology – Challenging the ideology that supports terrorism and the threat faced from those who promote it Individual – Preventing people from being drawn into terrorism and ensuring they are given appropriate advice and support Institutions – Supporting sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation.

Prevent Duty in schools Promoting British Values Schools ensure that British Values are promoted in the delivery of the curriculum and extra curricular activities and reflected in the general conduct of the school Democracy The rule of law Individual liberty Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and belief.

Prevent Duty in School Safeguarding Schools to ensure that they have robust safeguarding procedures and policies in place which include evidence of extremism and radicalisation. Online Safety Young people must not be able to access extremist ideas online in school. Young people and parents/guardians to be educated on keeping safe online.
