Tone The attitude the author has toward the subject and toward the audience  Example: Tone may be formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic, condescending

Mood How the literary work makes the reader feel

The individual writing style of an author Voice The individual writing style of an author

Style The way a writer writes and the technique which an individual author uses in his writing

Dialogue A written or spoken conversation between two or more people.

Pun A play on words in which a humorous effect is produced by using a word that suggests two or more meanings Examples: An elephant’s opinion carries a lot of weight. A horse is a very stable animal

Irony A figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words.

Oxymoron A figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect. The common oxymoron phrase is a combination of an adjective proceeded by a noun with contrasting meanings e.g. “cruel kindness.”

Stage Directions An instruction written into the script of a play, indicating stage actions, movements of performers, or production requirements
