determine the levels of certainty considering the following: speculate about what might have been happening at the moment the photograph was taken (stressing the fact it happened in 1939 i.e. the past).... determine the levels of certainty considering the following: When was the picture taken? Why was the man doing what he was doing? What was he feeling?

Examples of sentences: It must have happened during the war. The soldiers must have been thirsty. The soldier in the picture must have had a good sense of balance. The soldier in the picture might have wanted to help his comrades. The soldier in the picture might have received an order to bring tea. It might have been a bet. It might have been a prank. The soldier might have felt amused / nervous.

Students look at the picture and speculate about the person’s in question life or personality at the moment the picture was taken. try to determine how certain we are about his personality (generalisations/ oversimplifications allowed!), what he felt / thought when the photo was being taken, what attitude towards life he might have had as a young man.

Say what you see. Think about what this place might have been like in the past. The following modal verbs used to talk about the past: might have (possibility) could have (possibility) must have (certainty something was true) can’t have (certainty something wasn’t true)

It might have been a house. People who lived there must have been rich. It might have belonged to an important person (politician, businessman etc.) It can’t have been in the centre of the city because it’s now covered with plants. It must have had many rooms and a big garden. It might have been abandoned because it was haunted (my personal favourite!)

WHAT each situation was like: Studying all night for an important exam is tiring, exhausting, motivating Bungee jumping is exciting, frightening, amusing Not winning a competition is disappointing, demotivating, surprising situations/things/people that make us feel a certain way.

Sheila is excited about her holidays. John is bored with his job. An interesting book makes you feel interested in it. Doing something annoying makes you annoyed. Seeing something amusing makes you feel amused. I am interested in fashion. Sheila is excited about her holidays. John is bored with his job.

BORED vs BORING. Give an example: You are watching a really long film where nothing happens. The film is BORING. How do you feel? You feel BORED. You meet your neighbour and she tells you the same story about her cat all over again. The neighbour is a BORING person. You feel BORED. Something / someone boring makes you feel bored. You are bored because something / someone is boring.
