Dream Catchers First Nations Art

What Is a Dream Catcher? A dream catcher is a First Nations artwork. It is believed to be able to “catch” bad dreams in its web and ensure that the sleeper has only good dreams. There are many myths surrounding the origin of dream-catchers.

The Myths of Dream Catchers It is widely accepted that dream catchers originate from the Ojibwe First Nations tribe. In their myth, Spider Woman (named Asibikaashi) protects her children (the Natives) by spinning webs to catch evil. When the Natives disperse across the land, they begin to make their own webs (in the form of dream catchers) since she cannot be everywhere at once.
