Introduction to Taking Sides

Learning about Unresolved Issues in Psychology Think and talk about the subject matter of psychology. Why are there so many unresolved issues in psychology? What approach should we take in learning about these unresolved issues? In answering this, take a look at the next two slides. What two popular approaches do they depict? Which of these approaches would you choose in learning about unresolved issues? Why?

Lila M. Smith Traditional approach to education: “Banking conception” or “Pour it in” approach Especially not good for learning about unresolved issues—like in this class! 8:30-9:30?Take copies of Active Lrn, HTMI, New Paradigms, Lila M. Smith

Dialectical approach—Psychological issues in this text are presented in true dialectical fashion—with two distinct sides. Students are asked to familiarize themselves with both sides of an issue, look at the supporting evidence on both sides, and engage in constructive conversation about possible resolutions….Requires students to take an active role in making sense of an issue. **This results in a “spread it around” or cooperative learning approach. 8:30-9:30?Take copies of Active Lrn, HTMI, New Paradigms, Lila M. Smith

Please consider this: Now that you are aware of the approach that will be used in this course, how might you prepare differently for this course as compared to a more traditionally delivered fact-based course?
