Migration into the UK Key Question: What makes people undertake long and dangerous journeys to the UK?

To be able to interpret evidence and draw conclusions. Learning Objectives: To be able to interpret evidence and draw conclusions. To understand what motivates immigrants to undertake journeys.

STARTER There is a mystery to solve. In October 2005, Stan Bowden, a long distance lorry driver ran over a body as he drove into a motorway service station. Whose body was it and why was it there?

Main Task Work with a partner to solve the mystery. Using Activity sheet 5 sort through the pieces of evidence and try to find links between them. You can rearrange the statements to help you reconstruct the story.

Extension Task Using a blank World Map – find the UK and Vietnam. One part of the mystery that was never solved was Ky’s route from Vietnam to the UK. Plot a possible overland route he could have taken, labelling the countries he would have travelled through.

Plenary http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/may/27/immigration.topstories3 What are the possible solutions to the mystery? What makes people undertake such long and dangerous journeys? What does it tell us about Vietnam?
