The Solar System by Aliya Cole About 4.6 billion years ago the solar system formed. In the solar system there are 8 planets. The order of the planets in our solar system is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The Sun The mass of The Sun is 99.86% of the solar system. The Sun is so big you could fit over one million Earths inside the Sun. The Suns core creates energy called nuclear fusion.

Mercury On Mercury a year is only 88 days long. In our solar system, Mercury is the smallest planet and the closest planet to The Sun. Out of all the planets, Mercury is the second most densest planet.

Venus The second brightest natural object in the sky is Venus. Sometimes Venus is called “morning star” or “evening star”. The planet Venus snows metal and rains sulphuric acid.

Earth Earth is the only planet that has life. Earth is the only planet with water on its surface. The only inner planet to have a satellite is Earth, Earth’s satellite is the moon.

Mars Mars’s and Earth’s landmass are very similar. Mars is about 227,940,000 kilometers from The Sun. Mars’s and Earth’s landmass are very similar. This planet is named after the Roman God of war.

Asteroid Belt In 1801 the Asteroid Belt was first discovered. The Asteroid Belt is found between orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The Asteroid Belt is a disk shape.

Jupiter Jupiter is made out of gasses and is called the “Gas Giant”. Jupiter is the fifth planet from The Sun. Jupiter is found outside the asteroid belt.

Saturn Saturn is the most distant planet that can be seen by the naked eye. Saturn is the second largest planet in our solar system. Saturn was first looked at in 1610 by Galileo Galile.

Uranus Uranus was discovered by William Herschel in 1781. Uranus turns on its axis every 17 hours and 14 minutes. Uranus makes one trip around The Sun every 84 earth years.

Neptune Neptune takes 164.8 Earth years to orbit The Sun one time. Neptune was discovered by Jean Joseph Le Verrier. Neptune is named after the god of sea.

Dwarf Planet Pluto Pluto is named after the god of the underworld. Pluto was reclassified to be a dwarf planet in 2006. Pluto was discovered by Lowell Observatory on Feb. 18th 1930.

Earth’s Moon Another name for the Moon is Luna. The moon was created 30-50 million year after the formation of the solar system. The tides are caused by the moon because of magnetic forces in the solar system.

Stars The core of a star reaches to 16 million degrees Celsius. Most stars come in multiples. Most stars are red dwarfs.
