Summarizing as Texts get harder Lesson 9: Tackling Complexity Nonfiction

Have you ever heard? Think of a time when someone tried to tell you something, and they told you EVERY SINGLE DETAIL!

Have you ever heard? Think of a time when someone tried to tell you something, and they told you EVERY SINGLE DETAIL! Kind of like: First, we went on the corkscrew. It was this tall, blue, twisty slide with three turns. You sat in a seat and your legs dangled. The line was long, but we go to wait under this protective structure so we stayed dry. We kind of got hungry while we were waiting so then we went to get food. We got….

Teaching point Today I want to teach you that when readers summarize complex nonfiction texts, they craft short versions of a text. These summaries tend to include the author’s main ideas, how those main ideas relate to each other, and the key supportive details.

Let’s do this together Reread the When Lunch Fights Back, the part about the termites with the toxic bubbles on their backs that we studied for structure earlier. Reread asking yourself: What main ideas is this text teaching? How do those ideas relate to each other or got together? Note key sentences that provide evidence for the main ideas

INSERT PAGES 18 19 in here

Main ideas: Termites use defenses on their bodies for protection Scientists ask questions and research to find answers WRITING ABOUT THIS: In this section, Rebecca Johnson teaches that research led to discovering how termites fight off their enemies. One main idea is that scientists ask questions and research to find answers. These scientist asked what the blue ouches were made of. Another main idea is that termites use their bodies to kill their enemies. They carry packs that burst open when they are attacked.

Today, Will you try this work of writing out a summary at least once? Likely, you’ll pause when your brain is feeling full, seeing if you can say back the main ideas and supportive details the author just taught.

Quickly, get with your group share Quickly, get with your group Share amongst yourselves and compliment each other on one item in their summary.
