HIRING COMMITTEES’ GOAL HIRE THE BEST: FOR SCC AND OUR STUDENTS REPRESENT THE COLLEGE WELL BE EQUITABLE BE WELCOMING

Welcoming Behavior: Dialogue Dialogue can be achieved by allowing the candidate to ask questions. Allowing questions is welcoming behavior. Candidates are naturally curious and, if they have done their homework about SCC, they have both a need and a desire to know.

BE WELCOMING! Greeting Smile Open Body Language Pay attention to the applicant Be consistent: in note-taking and demonstrated interest in applicant Be Equity-minded

BEFORE YOU SCREEN, BEFORE YOU INTERVIEW…

The Implicit Bias Pyramid “WE ALL HAVE BIASES!” Decisions & Actions ”Inequitable” Understanding & Knowledge ”Skewed, Inaccurate, Biased” Beliefs & Assumptions ”Thoughts held as truths” Stereotypes & Attitudes “Characteristics subjectively attributed broadly”

WE ALL HAVE IMPLICIT BIAS Buried in our subconscious Created from years of personal experiences and exposure to information from the media, family, friends, and other sources

THE IMPLICIT ASSOCIATION TEST (IAT) There are different IATs. (i.e., race, gender, sexual orientation). Each IAT is: FREE & ANONYMOUS Administered by Project Implicit

Project Implicit is a non-profit organization and international collaboration between researchers who are interested in implicit social cognition - thoughts and feelings outside of conscious awareness and control. The goal of the organization is to educate the public about hidden biases and to provide a “virtual laboratory” for collecting data on the Internet.
