Important Facts of Tahiti The location of this island of Tahiti is off the coast of Australia, in the South Pacific Ocean. The land mass of the island covers 402 sq. mi The Capitol of Tahiti is, Papeete The official languages of Tahiti- Tahitian and French Population of the island-170,000. Mixed heritage- European and Chinese. Religions on the island: Half of the population are Protestant, 30% of the people are Roman Catholic, 7% of the people are The Church of Jesus Christ, 2% are members of the present day Adventist Church, others include Judaism and Buddhism.
Tahiti’s Geographic Layout Mainland Two landmasses make up Tahiti’s mainland - Tahiti-Nui and Tahiti-Iti. Mountain Ranges Has two volcanic mountain ranges. Bodies of water The Pacific Ocean, and is also surrounding by other islands. Climate Temperature ranges from 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Damaging tropical storms are possible.
Important Dates of Tahiti’s History/Celebrations People began to settle on the island of Tahiti in between the years of 2,000 to 1,000 B.C. 16th-18th century marked by contact with explorers. Christmas and New Years are the most important holidays in Tahiti. Chinese New Year is also celebrated on a date calculated on the lunar calendar.
Famous People Pomare IV- was a queen in 1827; ruled for 50 years Gaston Flosse- was a president in 1984; president for 20 years Gaston made south Pacific nuclear free zone Pomare V- Chief until 1891; last Pomare to hold power 4 years later he abdicated the throne and gave control of Tahiti to France
Tahiti’s Main Tourist Attractions The island itself, is a very nice place where tourists would be attracted to visit. The beaches are beautiful, making them the most popular sites on the island. The island does not have any famous dishes, but their regular meals consists of: seafood, vegetables, rice, and French bread.
