Ocean Currents. Objective Ocean currents are cause by unequal heating and differences in salinity. The currents distribute heat around the planet.

Ocean Currents. Two Types of Currents 1.Surface Currents 2.Deep water currents- very slow.
*Refer to Chapter 11 in your Textbook. Learning Goals: 1. I can differentiate between the various types of ocean currents. 2. I can describe the effect.

Movement of Ocean Water

Ocean currents – the movement of water within the ocean water Ocean currents – the movement of water within the ocean water. Caused by water temperature, water salinity, water density, wind, and gravitational pull from the moon.

Gyre – A circular motion of water in each of the major ocean basins.

Upwelling – The upward movement of ocean water from deep in the ocean to the surface.

Downwelling – The downward movement of ocean water from the surface.

El Nino – A time when surface waters are warmer causing nutrient-rich cold water to stay close to the bottom of the ocean.
