Types of Variable You will have to identify what the variables are and also choose which category of variable it belongs to. Friday, December 07, 2018Friday, December 07, 2018

What do you know already? In your own words try to describe what the word variable means in statistics. Write down as many different types of variable that you have encountered so far. You can work together and discuss this if you like? Friday, December 07, 2018Friday, December 07, 2018

Types of variable Notes Independent – A variable that doesn’t change during the experiment/survey. In an experiment this is called the explanatory variable. Dependent – A variable which is affected by other factors. In an experiment this is called the response variable. Categorical (nominal) – A variable with a choice of categories that CANNOT be put in order. Friday, December 07, 2018Friday, December 07, 2018

Types of variable Notes Dichotomous – A special example of a categorical variable. There are only 2 possible answers. Ordinal – A variable with responses which CAN be ordered but does not include numbers Quantitative – A variable which can expressed using numbers and is either discrete or continuous. Friday, December 07, 2018Friday, December 07, 2018

Types of Variable Notes A quantitative variable is discrete if there are individual values with gaps between them. It is continuous when the numerical values all link together seamlessly. Friday, December 07, 2018Friday, December 07, 2018
