The Master Teacher--Summary The Role of the Teacher is to join the Holy Spirit in guiding, instructing, and shepherding God’s people toward obedient living in Christ. It is not enough for the teacher to dispense truth, he/she must model, hold fast to, and warn in relation to it. A teacher cannot just be a giver of information, but rather a catalyst for life-change.
My “Take Away!” What am I learning? What could I teach others?
Creative Lecturing I was in the back row listening as a very sincere but misinformed leader was trying to teach a group of fifth graders about the characteristics of God. He was pulling the prepared items—21 to be exact—out of a large paper bag. With each item—(“How is God like a candy bar?” “How is God like a comb?” etc.)—I became more concerned. Then I looked at the other leaders. They were confused! What did the students get? They got the leftover items that the leader gave away after he used them to explain God. Whew! I wish I would have had time to chat with him about the way kids learn before he went to all that work. I wish he would have known about the nature of young boys before he became so discouraged at the lack of response. I wish he wouldn’t have equated spiritual unresponsiveness and mental confusion before he complained about the group. There is a lot to learn about motivation which can be gleaned from pondering the nature of the student.
