Ch. 5 S. 1 The Study of Consciousness Obj: Analyze the nature of consciousness.
Consciousness as a Construct Consciousness is the awareness of things inside and outside ourselves. Can consciousness by studied? Some psychologists believe so because it can be linked with measurable behaviors, such as talking.
Meanings of Consciousness Several types of awareness…therefore, consciousness is used in a variety of ways. As Sensory Awareness- you are conscious of things outside yourself (sights, smells, etc.)
As a Direct Inner Awareness – you are conscious of an image through what psychologists call direct inner awareness. (feeling angry, love…you do not see or smell these thoughts)
As a Sense of Self – you understand that you are unique individuals, separate from other people and from your surroundings. Self-awareness.
Levels of Consciousness Sometimes, we are not aware of our awareness. Preconscious level – not in your awareness right now, but you could recall them if you had to.
Unconscious level – (or subconscious) is usually unavailable to awareness, hidden information. Freud says we use defense mechanisms, to push painful or unacceptable ideas out of our consciousness.
Nonconscious level – where many of our basic biological functions exist (can’t feel fingernails growing, etc.)
Altered States of Consciousness Consciousness may also refer to being awake. An altered state then would be when you are asleep, or under the influence of drugs.
