Description tips

BRAINSTORMING IDENTIFYING THEME: Formulate a sentence in which you state what the photo is showing. DO NOT DESCRIBE IT yet. For example: This photo is about the environment and how tourism helps the economy of poorer countries. This photo is about how healthy it is to take time off to explore nature and to learn about the importance of protecting ecosystems.

When analysing the photograph, go from general to specific.  Now analyze the following images based on the following criteria: • What do you notice first about this image and why? • What emotions are present? • What is the situation? What is happening? • What is the setting (place and time)? • Does the picture contain any repetition, framing, or balancing (colours signaling something in particular)? • What message or theme does the picture seem to convey? What aspects of the picture make you think this? Is it supposed to speak for or against an issue? The photograph will always exemplify or emphasize a point related to the options. Think about why the photograph was chosen and how it relates to an English B  option, in this case science and technology. Ask yourself: "Why did the photographer take this picture?"

"Eugenics is the study of the agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations either physically or mentally. What do you notice first about this image and why? Who are the people in this image? What emotions are present? What is the situation? What is happening? What is the setting (place and time)? Does the picture contain any repetition, framing, or balancing (colours signaling something in particular)? What message or theme does the picture seem to convey? What aspects of the picture make you think this? Is it supposed to speak for or against an issue?

1) The racial diversity, because of the amount of people that is in the picture. 2) There are people from many races and social classes, judging their appearance. Everyone looks happy and seems to be nice people.  3) It doesn't seem that they are doing something apart from smiling to the camera. They are just standing there, representing unity. 4) The setting is a white background, and there's no clear notion of time. 5) The balance of white background and amount of people gives the image of tranquility, a peaceful environment helps to understand the symbolism of the image: each person in the photograph is feeling comfortable with the ones that are surrounding him. 6) Racial equity, given by the harmony and simplicity of the picture. The idea of evolution is given by the quote of Eugenics, promoting in a positive aspect the improvement of racial qualities in future generations.

What I firstly notice about the picture is a large number of people happily gathered in a non-existing place that resembles eternity, which is related to the emotions the image is portraying. All the people are different ethnically speaking, which may allow us to state they are highly tolerant, as they do not mind these differences when meeting others. Colour then plays an important role as they are all dressed alike in terms plain colours and designs that highlights their skin colour. It is important to notice that older people stands in the front and in the middle of the group, and people around become younger. This can lead us to think that old people are the basis on which generations acquire knowledge about being tolerant and respectful towards others. However, eugenics try to break this differentiation in order to "improve" racial qualities, generally based on a government ideals about it. As it was intended during World War II, population was cleaned so then there was just a pure race that was worth to preserve: Arian race. Therefore, this picture tell us that we have to be tolerant and open-minded so then we become happier in our social interactions. Eugenics restrict our chances of getting along with others and then our possibility of being fully happy.

The image represents a forest whose trees are being fastly consumed in a prairie. But, what makes this image so interesting is the fact that the forest is lung-shaped. Then what tells us is that irresponsible industrialism is consuming not just our resources but our ability to breath. Trees are responsible of oxigenating the Earth and then they have an importan biological role, but the image goes further as it may allude to the fact that greed is taking the best of us and is actually avoiding us from living. Trees are our lungs and give us life, by destroying them we are doing nothing but... destroying ourselves.   In other words, the message the image is trying to give is related to Global Warming and how it is affecting wildlife. It is a more superficial analysis of the values involved but, it is important to be taken in account. As after all, this is part of a Greenpeace propaganda and its main target is enviromenal issues.

• What do you notice first about this image and why • What do you notice first about this image and why?  The first thing I notice about the picture is the seagull which seems to be covered by oil or dirt.  • What emotions are present?  The emotions presented in this image is sadness  • What is the situation? What is happening?  A seagull is desolate and covered in dirt.  • What is the setting (place and time)?  The place could be a beach, and the time, daytime  • Does the picture contain any repetition, framing, or balancing (colours signaling something in particular)?  A particular colour present on this image is the brown colour of dirt or oil covering the seagull    • What message or theme does the picture seem to convey? What aspects of the picture make you think this? Is it supposed to speak for or against an issue?  The message that this picture seems to convey is mainly polution which is represented by the oil or dirt covering the seagull. It's supposed to speak against the issue.

On this picture we can see a women about 25-30 years old with a cigarette at his right hand, and she is smoking it, the smoke appears like a dangerous weapons like a knife and a rope that can kill the person that smoke. In relation with the caption "Kill a cigarette and save a life. Yours" is that people need to stop smoking because is dangerous for them self so they need to take away the cigarettes so they will be more healthy. The emotions of the women are of disinters because she doesn't care about what the smoke are going to do to her. Also the colors (Black and White) are important on this photo because it gives to this one a serious or deadly appearance to the woman with the cigarette, like if she wear going to die because of it. Also I think that the photographer take this picture because he or she want to show us and the world in general that if you smoke, this one will kill you slowly, because smoking is so dangerous that also people around to only one person that smoke, will always be affected of this.
