“Heart Smarts” Anatomy of the Heart Timeline of Instructional Sequence: The timeline for this lesson is 1, 45-minute class period. Depending on factors that may arise during the course of the lesson, the class may extend to 2, 45-minute class periods. 10 minutes - Introduction using “Song” passing out words to song, discussing the plan for the lesson with the HSTE students 20 minutes – Presentation using PowerPoint to highlight specific objectives. 10 minutes – Guided practice using labeling exercise and handout labeling worksheet for students to complete as independent practice. 5 minutes – Lesson summary. Pumps your Blood John Peters, EMT-LP Hereford High School

Do you know these already? Identify the 4 chambers, the 2 sides and 4 valves of the heart Define the medical terms associated with the heart Discuss how the blood flows through the heart Distinguish between the Right and Left side of the heart Understand where the blood flows after it leaves the heart (Lungs and Body) Compare and contrast Oxygenated and Deoxygenated blood Throughout the lesson, Red type means Oxygenated and Green type means Deoxygenated blood. Objective 1. Identify the 4 chambers, the 2 sides and 4 valves of the heart (Knowledge) Objective 2. Define the medical terms associated with the lesson (Knowledge) Objective 3. Discuss how the blood flows through the heart (Comprehension) Objective 4. Distinguishes the right and left side of the heart (Analysis) Objective 5. Integrates where the blood flows after it leaves the heart (Lungs and Body) (Synthesis) Objective 6. Compares and contrasts Oxygenated and Deoxygenated blood. (Evaluation) You will by the end of this class!

The Heart is an Organ The heart has two sides, the Right and Left separated by the Septum The heart has upper and lower chambers, the Atria and the Ventricles The septum which is a muscular wall dividing the heart into the two halves.

The 2 Sides of the Heart The right side of the heart – to the lungs The left side of the heart – to the body The upper and lower chambers of the heart The Atria The Right Atrium and the Left Atrium The Ventricles The Right Ventricle and the Left Ventricle Each side of the heart has an Atrium and a Ventricle

Distinguish between the Right and Left side of the heart The Right side of the heart pumps Deoxygenated blood to the lungs A Low Pressure Pump Separated by the Septum The Left side of the heart pumps Oxygenated blood to the body A High Pressure Pump The Left side of the heart is larger and thicker than the right side of the heart (3 times as thick) Re-emphasize the septum which is a muscular wall dividing the heart into the two halves. Due to how far the blood must travel as opposed to the right side that only has to pump to the lungs.

The 4 Valves of the Heart Tricuspid Pulmonary Mitral Aortic (Bicuspid); and Aortic Mnemonic - T P M A The valves allow blood to enter each chamber and prevent a backflow of blood back into a chamber. TPMA - mnemonic for the correct order of the valves, Tricuspid, Pulmonary, Mitral (also called the Bicuspid) and the Aortic valves

Cardiac Terminology (Medical Terminology) Right Side Verse #1 Superior and Inferior Vena Cava Right Atrium Tricuspid Valve Right Ventricle Pulmonary Valve Pulmonary Arteries Lungs Left Side Verse #2 Pulmonary Veins Left Atrium Bicuspid/Mitral Valve Left Ventricle Aortic Valve Aorta - Arteries The Body

Cardiac Terminology (Medical Terminology) Continued Arterioles Capillaries where the O2 and CO2exchange – a process known as “internal respiration” as opposed to “external respiration” when we breathe Venules Veins Superior and Inferior vena cava

After the Oxygenated blood leaves the heart where does it go? Aorta Arteries Arterioles Capillaries Cells Internal Respiration Leaving the left ventricle and through the aorta blood that contains oxygen and nutrients are carried to every cell in the body. Blood high in CO2 and waste products travels by way of the veins through the right side of the heart to “off-load” the CO2 and waste products through the process of respiration.

"PUMP YOUR BLOOD" SONG VERSE ONE Pump, pump, pumps your Blood. The Right atrium’s where the process begins, where the CO2 Blood enters the heart. Through the tricuspid valve, to the Right ventricle, the pulmonary artery, and lungs. Once inside the lungs, it dumps its carbon dioxide and picks up its oxygen supply. Then it’s back to the heart through the pulmonary vein, through the atrium and Left ventricle. Verse one deals with “Deoxygenated” blood.

After the body uses the oxygen and nutrients where does the deoxygenated blood go? Cells Venules Veins Pulmonary Vein

"PUMP YOUR BLOOD" SONG - VERSE TWO Pump, pump, pumps your Blood. The aortic valve’s, where the Blood leaves the heart, then channeled to the rest of the bod. The arteries, arterioles, and capillaries too bring the oxygenated Blood to the cells. The tissues and the cells trade off waste and CO2, which is carried through the venules and the veins, through the larger vena cava to the atrium and lungs, and we're back to where we started in the heart. Verse two deals with “Oxygenated” blood.

Blood Discuss the difference between: Deoxygenated Oxygenated

Do you know? Summary Do you know the two sides of the heart? Do you know the names of the upper and lower chambers of the heart? Do you know the 4 valves of the heart? Do you know what is deoxygenated blood? Do you know what is oxygenated blood? Do you know how the blood flows through the heart? Do you know how the blood flows through the circulatory system? Ask student if they can answer the questions above

Practice Worksheet Music Contest Label the diagram, use the words from the song and the Heart Anatomy Glossary to track the flow of blood through the heart. Music Contest Develop a new version of the “Pumps Your Blood” song. The winner will get to make a music video and have it posted as a Podcast on the school website. Refer students to the lesson handout that contains the worksheet, Heart Glossary, and the words to the “Pumps your blood” song.

Have a Great Day!
