Enhancing CDC’s Colorectal Cancer Control Program Two years ago, CDC created the national CRCCP, modeled after its successful BCCCP. Its 29 states and tribal organizations must increase screening to 80% by 2020.

Reducing structural barriers Small media Client reminders Reducing structural barriers Grantees must use evidence based strategies from the Community Guide to Preventive Services. These strategies include small media, client reminders, and reducing structural barriers.

States already create such resources, but it isn’t always pretty States already create such resources, but it isn’t always pretty. In an environmental scan of state and local health agencies, we found over 200 resources. Though well-intentioned, many fell short of modern standards.

Challenge Solution Effective promotion Diverse audiences Limited resources Solution Easy High quality Customizable The challenge for states is promoting screening in diverse audiences given limited resources. We want to make it easy for them to create quality, evidence-based resources for different populations. We call this solution MIYO.

MIYO is a web-based program we first created to promote HPV vaccination. We have now created a new MIYO for the CDC grantees. Users first select which evidence-based strategy they want to use, then begin building their resource.

They choose an image, a message and a call-to-action, add their logo and contact information and click a button to generate an electronic file of what they made. They can download the file or send it to FedEx/Kinkos.

The good news is, they’re using it a lot The good news is, they’re using it a lot. These are inserts for newsletters, church bulletins, and work sites made in New Mexico. You can see they’ve targeted different populations using different images and messages. New Mexico

These are from postcard reminders from Iowa These are from postcard reminders from Iowa. They can be mailed or e-mailed by employers or health care providers to screening-eligible men and women they serve. The back is customized with local contact information. Iowa

Montana New Hampshire Michigan Pennsylvania These posters show how different states have taken the same design template but customized it with different messages, photos and action steps for different populations. Michigan Pennsylvania

As you can see with this catalog, MIYO users can make many resources As you can see with this catalog, MIYO users can make many resources. For each of these evidence-based approaches, users can customize everything for their organization and target populations.

6 346 397 - 6 different types of EB strategies (23 versions) - 346 messages (101) in Spanish - 397 photos SO FAR, the response has been great.

MIYO users and orders, Mar.-Oct. 2011 We launched CRC-MIYO in March. The blue line shows the steady increase in registered users in the first six months. The green line shows orders placed. These started slowly, but increased dramatically over the summer.

170 215 19,521 165 registered users, 28 of 29 grantee states 75 users have placed 215 orders 19,521 individual resources printed

Dissemination lessons Allow experimentation (2,258 created vs. 215 ordered) Field agents critical (119 contacts with 69 users) We’re learning a ton. For example, users create 10 resources for every 1 they order. So they’re experimenting a lot. Technical support is critical. So far, we’ve provided help to 69 different users.

Dissemination lessons Customer orientation (73 user-requested images) Track usage trends (favorites, themes) The system is constantly evolving to meet user needs. For example, 18% of the image library came from user requests. The system also generates usage data that helps refine the program.

7 For example, these are the six most-used images to date. They account for about 25% of all images selected and reflect a clear focus on couples and families. This tells us something about user decisions.

Dissemination Pull “I’d love to have MIYO for breast cancer” - Linda Gregory, Colorado “All states need access, not just the funded ones” We’re also seeing growing demand for MIYO. In Colorado, they want MIYO for breast cancer. Idaho wants access to MIYO, even though they aren’t a grantee. And Michigan is telling its partners to use MIYO. - Patti Moran, Idaho “We’re telling all our contacts to use MIYO” - Angela McFall, Michigan

Organic dissemination in MT practice networks In Montana and other states, we’re seeing patterns like this. We started at the state health department in Helena, but MIYO has spread across the state and is now in 10 different communities.

Vision Every state, local and community health agency has free access to MIYO via CDC and uses it to create effective, population specific health information for all Americans. Two years ago, CDC created the national CRCCP, modeled after its successful BCCCP. Its 29 states and tribal organizations must increase screening to 80% by 2020.
