What is Sustainable Procurement
Three Key Findings about Sustainable Purchasing Good policy creates demand Aggregating supply spurs growth Innovation overcomes barriers
Good Policy Creates Demand: Minneapolis In 2005, the City Council adopted the Minneapolis Living Wage and Responsible Public Spending ordinance, which mandates that, “Whenever the city invests public funds in private development projects, and whenever the city enters into contracts for services, those projects and contracts should create the greatest number of living-wage jobs possible in Minneapolis.”
Aggregating Supply Spurs Growth: TOG TOG aggregates, distributes, and markets USDA organic produce on behalf of its farmers to restaurants, major organic grocery retailers, food retail cooperatives, community- supported agriculture, institutional food service buyers, produce distributors, and buying clubs.
Innovation Overcomes Barriers: ICIC Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) is a non-profit organization championing small businesses to promote economic growth within inner cities. Its goals are to foster an anchored local economy, inner-city business growth, and the economic resilience needed for sustainable communities.
