Geography & Early Japan Japan is composed of four main islands and many smaller ones. Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu, and Hokkaido The traditional myth of creation for Japan was… Two gods dipped a spear into the sea. When they pulled it out, the drops of salt water landed on the surface and formed the islands of Japan.

The first Emperors The most powerful of the clans was the Yamato. The chiefs claim they were descended from the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Changes in Religion and Philosophy Around A.D. 600, Shotoku took charge of the government and began reforms. He based these reforms on the Chinese government which had a strong emperor and trained officials.

Changes in Religion and Philosophy The constitution was based upon the ideas of Confucius. It gave the emperor all the power and the ability to appoint officials. He sent officials and students to China.
