The main source of energy for life on Earth comes from the Sun. Plants use light energy from the sun to make food.
Food Chains show how energy moves through the ecosystem in a linear fashion.

How do organisms get energy?. Getting Energy Food chain – a sequence of connected producers and consumers Producer – an organism that makes its own food.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.
Food Chains Food Webs. Food Chains A food chain shows what is eaten by what… The arrows show which way the energy is going in the chain.
Food Chains and Food Webs. Food Chain  Events in which one organism eats another.
Food Chains, Webs, and Pyramids. Ecosystems are divided into different sections called trophic levels Each trophic level represents a transfer of energy.
Ecology Terms The ones you have to know. Producer: An organism that can make its own food for energy.

4-6-18 Build a Food Web Recap; Energy in Ecosystems Quiz

Do Now: Sit with your groups and study the food webs you have created. Answer the questions on the handout in regards to your food web.

Build a Food Web Questions Carnivores: possible answers include, alligator, largemouth bass, great blue heron, newts and salamanders Herbivores: possible answers include marsh rabbit, beaver, grass shrimp Omnivores: possible answers include pond frog, raccoon, crayfish, Decomposers (organisms that break down dead material on a molecular level): bacteria Detritovores: possible answers include insects, toadstool fungus, vulture

Build a Food Web Questions Food Chain #1 Food Chain #2 Food Chain #3 Producer Primary consumer Secondary consumer Tertiary consumer

Build a Food Web Questions What would happen if aquatic plants died out because of pollution? The primary consumers that feed on aquatic plants may experience a population decrease due to less available food. As a result, the secondary consumers that eat those primary consumers may then decrease in population size. Then, the tertiary consumers that eat those secondary consumers may decrease in population size.

Build a Food Web Questions What would happen to your food web if the population of a tertiary consumer was to double? The secondary consumer population would decrease due to more predators. This may later lead to the primary consumer population increasing since they have fewer predators. The tertiary consumer population may also later decrease as they will not have enough food to sustain their population size.

Build a Food Web Questions How would the introduction of Asian carp affect your food web? The organisms that eat zooplankton will experience greater competition for food. As a result, their population would decrease.

Quiz Instructions 15 minutes to complete the quiz. Read the directions carefully. No talking No getting up without permission Keep your eyes on your own work When you are finished, raise your hand and Mr. Santos will come to collect your quiz. Then, silently read.
