Politics in europe Ms. Baquedano

King HENRY Legal reform was his priority -created juries for accusing people -required court trials Issues the constitution of Clarendon: document spelling out a king’s rights Catholic Church hated this: document let courts try clergy, instead of a church court Led to the killing on Thomas Becket at Canterbury church by king’s knights

King John Very unpopular king Lost large amounts of land Made heavy taxes Ignored their rights Taxed the church A group of angry nobles forced him to sign the Magna Carta, limiting King’s power.

Magna Carta made king agree to uphold laws and rights of people Needed to ask before taxing people and church No one can be arrested before a trial by peers (habeas corpus)

King edward Created the model parliament a group of representatives of people of all classes

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?? These changes made feudalism collapse The Magna Carta gave people rights they never had, and weakened the king’s strength Edward’s Model Parliament gave common people a voice, a say in government. THESE WILL BE ON THE TEST
