The Outsiders Vocabulary Words Chapters 5-9

Imploringly POS: Adverb Definition: begging urgently, as for aid or mercy Sentence: The child's sad eyes look up at us imploringly, until we finally gave in and returned her stuffed animal.

Eluded POS: Verb Definition: to escape the understanding, perception, or appreciation of Sentence: The answer eluded me.

Conviction POS: Noun Definition: a fixed or firm belief Sentence: No clever argument, no persuasive fact or theory could make a dent in his conviction in the rightness of his position.

Pleading POS: Noun Definition: a formal statement, usually written, setting forth the cause of action or defense of a case. Sentence: He stood before the court pleading his case for innocence .

Genuine POS: Adjective Definition: not counterfeit; authentic; real Sentence: She showed genuine sympathy for the homeless man by offering him a warm meal.

Outcast POS: Noun Definition: a person who is rejected or cast out from home or society Sentence: In the beginning the area was settled by outcasts, adventurers, and felons.

Groggy POS: Adjective Definition: staggering, as from exhaustion or blows; weak or exhausted Sentence: The boxer was groggy from his opponent's hard left jab.

Menace POS: Noun Definition: a person whose actions, attitudes, or ideas are considered dangerous or harmful Sentence: When he gets behind the wheel of a car, he's a real menace.

Conformity POS: Noun Definition: compliance in actions, behavior, etc., with certain accepted standards or norms Sentence: Because of the dress code at Langston, there is conformity in the what all students wear to school.

Triumph POS: Noun Definition: a significant success or noteworthy achievement; an instance of victory. Sentence: Talon stood and threw his head back in a booming laugh of triumph, until Dusty launched at him and knocked him off his feet.

Delirious POS: Adjective Definition: uncontrolled excitement or emotion Sentence: She was delirious with joy at the news.

Pity POS: Noun Definition: sympathetic or sorrow evoked by the suffering, distress, or misfortune of another Sentence: She felt pity for the starving child.

Acquitted POS: Verb Definition: to free or clear oneself Sentence: He acquitted himself of suspicion.

Vast POS: Adjective Definition: of very great size ; huge Sentence: There were vast piles of rubble left in the wake of the war.
