Senator Albert Beveridge “God has made us the master organizers of the world…” What is the Senator saying in this quote? Do you agree or disagree with his statement?

Imperialism Theme: U.S. Expansion and Imperialism; Global involvement China, Spanish American War, Philippines, Latin America

Aim: Was expansion justified? Essential Questions: To what extent was the late 19th century and early 20th century and early 20th century U.S. expansionism a continuation of past U.S. expansionism and to what extent was it a departure? What is a more accurate term that describes American foreign policy in the late 19th and early 20th century: expansionism or imperialism?

Vocabulary: Imperialism: strong country takes over a weaker country for the purpose of acquiring raw materials, new markets, power, prestige. U.S. Imperialism: late 19th- early 20th century: -seek new markets, resources, world prestige, NAVAL PORTS around the world.  Major Acquisitions: -Alaska (purchase) -Hawaii (acquire/take over) -Puerto Rico , Guam (treaty) -Philippines (purchase)

Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (MA) sees imperialism as a continuation of Manifest Destiny (1895) "From the Rio Grande to the Arctic Ocean there should be but one flag and one country. In the interest of our commerce and of our fullest development we 'should build the Nicaragua canal and for the sake of our commercial supremacy in the Pacific we should control the Hawaiian Islands and maintain our influence in Samoa. Commerce flows through the flag, and we should build up a navy strong enough to give protection to Americans in every quarter of the globe."

Treaty of Paris (December 10, 1898) Recognition of Cuban independence (U.S. had $50 million invested in Cuba!) US acquisition of two Spanish Islands Puerto Rico- Caribbean Sea Guam- Pacific Ocean US acquires the Philippines from Spain for $20,000,000

A Republic, Not An Empire by former Presidential candidate James Buchanan “…Our (United States foreign policy) situation is unsustainable. The steady expansion of global commitment, as relative national power declines, is a prescription for endless wars and eventual disaster.” In your notebook: Describe the meaning of this quote. Do you believe that it is relevant today? Explain.
