Do you think that it is important for the United States to have involvement with countries overseas? WHY? What do you think the role of the U.S. should be in the world?

Imperialism

Avoiding involvement in other countries’ affairs. Isolationism Avoiding involvement in other countries’ affairs.

Expanding national boundaries. Expansionism Expanding national boundaries.

Imperialism Building empires by imposing political and economic control over weaker countries or regions around the world.

What’s with all the “ism”s? Adding “ism” to the end of a word indicates action, a condition that something is in, a belief, or a prejudice.

Causes of American Imperialism The Western Frontier closes (1890) The U.S. needs to acquire new raw materials (natural resources) and new markets to sell their goods.

Causes Continued Many Americans want to spread U.S. culture and values. Manifest Destiny! European nations are already acquiring land overseas, and the U.S. needs to get involved to compete!

Colonialism in Africa Colonies had been formed in Africa as soon as the Age of Exploration started. But during the 19th century, Europe went land-grabbing.

Colonialism in Asia As soon as Marco Polo returned from his adventure in China, colonies started forming throughout Asia. Most of the colonies were not given independence until the mid- to late-20th century.

Effects of U.S. Imperialism The U.S. Navy grew in size and power. The U.S. gained control of territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Effects Continued The U.S. opened trade with China. The U.S. built the Panama Canal. The U.S. sent troops to Latin American nations to protect its interests.

So why did American hop on the band wagon? Gain power Gain recognition Implement foreign policy Rid of economic surplus

Which nations had influence in China? UK Germany Japan France Russia US Russia controlled the areas north of the Great Wall, Germany the Shandong Province, Japan the Fujian Province, Britain the Yangtze River basin, France the southwestern Chinese provinces bordering French Indochina and Britain/France jointly the Guangdong Province. The US and all the other powers maintained administrative districts in Shanghai.

China’s Reaction to Imperialism Tsu Hsi, empress dowager, wanted China to rid of imperial powers. The Opium Wars with UK and France Boxers’ Rebellion
