Urban and Regional Statistics Working Party An overview of the other Urban Audit Activities Lewis Dijkstra, PhD lewis.dijkstra@ec.europa.eu

Other Activities Urban Audit Perception Survey GMES Boundary analysis Urban Audit Website and the “Big Book” Urban Audit Analysis

Urban Audit Perception Survey First survey in February 2004 of 31 cities in the EU 15 N=300 Published the Urban Audit Perception Leaflet Considerable amount of interest of the press Several cities/countries expressed interest in replicating the survey for additional cities

UAPS 2006 75 cities in the EU29 N=500 Survey end of October 2006 Results November/December 2006 14 additional German cities are participating at their own expense Possibly some Bulgarian cities

Global Monitoring for Environment and Security GMES is jointly funded by the ESA and the Commission An initiative for the implementation of information services dealing with environment and security It is based on observation data received from Earth Observation satellites and ground based information

Land Monitoring Fast Track initiative which will be operational by 2008 (link to the Jobs and Growth Agenda) Objective by the end of 2007 have a detailed land use map of 40 cities (mostly Urban Audit cities) and their morphological zones beyond their city boundaries Based on satellite images and in situ information Could be expanded to all cities over 100 000

Erfurt Land Use Level 4 Urban Atlas example

Boundary analysis Administrative boundaries in comparison with morphological ones Urban Morphological zones were created for contiguous urban areas with more than 100 000 inhabitants (definition of UMZ a set of urban areas laying less than 200m apart) Includes several multi-city UMZ such as Gent-Antwerp- Brussels, Manchester-Liverpool, Köln-Bonn, Sosnowiec-Katowice-Gliwice …

Population density map based on a disagregation of LAU2 population according to Corine land use cover cells (100m x 100m) Method JRC

No UMZ for small cities In half of the cities 90% of the population in the UMZ In three out four cities it is above 80%

UA Website & Big Book Is in the process of being updated with the latest information and the addition of the Turkish cities The book will also be updated and expanded to cover the Turkish cities In the future, see whether the site can be replaced by CARP Possibility of SCD mapping on demand?
