Do Now separate sheet of paper 1. What are the parts of a chemical reaction? 2. What is the equation for photosynthesis? In words and chemical ? 3. What is the purpose of photosynthesis and what part of the plant does it occur? 4. What are the two steps (reactions) in photosynthesis? 5. How do plants get the reactants to carry out photosynthesis? 6. If plants use photosynthesis to make food and get energy, how does Claudel get energy? Do Now separate sheet of paper What are the 4 macromoleuces? Where does photosynthesis occur? Does photosynthesis absorb or release energy? What types of cells carry out photo? Big Goal?

Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration EQ: How is energy acquired and used by organisms?

Making connections with Claudel and the family Basic Bubba Claudel the Cell Penny the Plant Cell Making connections with Claudel and the family What do we know about Claudel and the cousins so far? What do all three cousins have in common? How are Claudel and Penny different from Bubba? How do Claudel and Penny use the following macromolecules? Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, & Nucleic Acids? Why is DNA replication important to Claudel and Penny? Where do these cells get the energy to perform all cellular activities ?

What is photosynthesis? Sun Light Oxygen Gas that exits through the stomata of the leaves Chlorophyll inside of Chloroplast Carbon Dioxide Gas that enters through the stomata of the leaves Trap light energy to make food (sugars) Sugar Photo= light Synthesis = build Water Converted to starch and stored in the plant vacuole as food Absorbed from the roots - Capillary action

Photo Review Where does it occur? Purpose? Equation: sun CO2 Photo Review Where does it occur? Chloroplast (plants cells) Purpose? Make food for the plant Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O +sun C6H12O6 + 6O2 SUGAR & Oxygen

Cellular Respiration Identify the reactants, products, and basic function of aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Lets investigate!

What’s happening? Ingredients: Predictions? Warm water Yeast Sugar Is yeast alive? Where does it get energy?

Key Point #1 All living organisms need energy to carry out the processes of life.

What do we need energy for? synthesis (building for growth) reproduction active transport movement temperature control (making heat) Which is to say… if you don’t eat, you die… because you run out of energy. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics takes over!

Think-Pair-Share Where do we get our energy from? What is in our foods that we need that we use for energy?

Where do we get energy? Energy is stored in organic molecules carbohydrates, lipids, proteins Animals are energy consumers, they eat these organic molecules in their food digest food to get fuels for energy (ATP) We eat to take in the fuels to make ATP which will then be used to help us build biomolecules and grow and move and… live! heterotrophs = “fed by others” vs. autotrophs = “self-feeders”

Stop and think: What organelle in Eukaryotic cells are responsible for making energy?

Mitochondria are everywhere!! animal cells plant cells Both plants and animals have mitochondria!

ATP What is ATP? ATP= Adenosine TriPhosphate ATP is cellular energy Without ATP, our cells cant function Recall: cells tissue  organs …. ATP 2009-2010

How do our cells make energy? Cellular respiration: a chemical reaction the breaks down sugar (food) to produce ATP Occurs in mitochondria Requires oxygen Aerobic respiration Respiration release energy the cell can use Movement of hydrogen atoms from glucose to water Label the mitochondria in your notes!

Stop and think CR is a chemical reaction, what are the two parts of a chemical reaction? What are the catalyst in living things that helps speed up the rate of reaction?

Cellular Respiration Equation C6H12O6 6O2 ATP 6CO2 6H2O  + glucose + oxygen  energy + carbon + water dioxide Reactants? Products? Box them! Circle them!

What if oxygen is missing? No oxygen available aerobic respiration Without oxygen, the reaction Becomes Anaerobic Respiration aka Fermentation Produce very little amount of ATP O2

Anaerobic Respiration AKA Fermentation Two types: Alcohol fermentation Yeast; make beer, wine, bread glucose  ATP + CO2+ alcohol Lactic acid fermentation bacteria make yogurt animals feel muscle fatigue glucose  ATP + lactic acid When would the mito not be present? What type of cell? - prokaryotic still living, still need energy, just not as much O2

When you breath, you inspire. When you do not breath, you expire! Ha! When you breath, you inspire. When you do not breath, you expire!

Got the energy… Ask Questions!! Wait! What about the balloon? 2009-2010

What’s happening? Ingredients: How is the balloon expanding? Warm water, yeast & sugar How is the balloon expanding? Is this aerobic or anaerobic respiration? What were the products and reactants? glucose  ATP + CO2+ alcohol
