Metals

Internal Achievement standard 90936: 4 Credits 4 and ½ weeks long Assessment involves practical examining properties of certain metals and research about their implications in society. *You don’t have to turn Lead into Gold in this achievement standard. =D

Because we use metals all the time. Why learn metals? Because we use metals all the time.

Periodic Table

What are metals? The basic chemical elements are divided into metals and non-metal, however there is no sharp dividing line between the two. A metal may be defined as a chemical element that possesses ‘Metallic properties’ Metallic properties’ are defined as: Luster, Good thermal and electrical conductivity Capability of being permanently shaped or deformed at room temperature (malleable = hammered into shapes and ductile = drawn into wires) In electrolysis, carries a positive charge that is liberated at the cathode.(-)

(Some of the metals are quite sharp so don’t play with it) Examine the elements Instructions: In groups of three, circulate around the room and examine each of the elements and look at their appearance. For those elements that are not in the vial, you can try bend them to examine malleability and put them in a circuit to look at conductivity. Record the results in your table where appropriate, and if you run out of space write in your book. (Some of the metals are quite sharp so don’t play with it)
