Higgs Recoil Mass Study ILC Physics Meeting Jacqueline Yan (KEK) LCWS2013 2013/07/20 ILC@富山 1

Current Status & New Activities Last week (General Meeting): showed full results of ZH analysis using Kernel function fitting (all leptonic channels , ECM, and beam polarization) confirmed minimum bias due to Ptsum cut using current nominal statistics samples What ‘s NEW this week formed plan for Higgs recoil study based on discussions at General Meeting checked Higgs decay mode dependence using high statistics sample generated for EACH DECAY MODE + investigate the bias using MC Truth Info. Then I added all other BG and sig processes that hhave been generated as samples, even though I presumed them to be not important for Zmumu analysis at 250 GeV. I wanted to check I didn’t msis anything. I almost didn’t miss anything, except for WW_sl, Some of the quarks may have decayed secondarily into muons, and I left it out. There are about 130 events left after all cuts. While other were mostly 0. The results were only a little different after including this.

Zμμ channel Reconstructed data recoil mass histogram 250 GeV : (- 0.8, + 0.3) 250 GeV : (+0.8, -0.3) Sig + BG BG Signal 350 GeV : (-0.8, +0.3) 350 GeV : (+0.8, -0.3) Now here is the plot for the fitted recoil mass including all signal and BG samples listed earlier, and after implementing all the cuts. Ifor fitting, I used GPET for signal and 3rd order polynomial for BG. The fitted recoil mass came out to be 125.3 GeV, and the error of this was about 70 MeV. at present stage this fitted mass precision has much meaning , until AFTER I evaluate the validity of my analysis thouroughly using pseudo experiments, by generating Toy MC events.

There are about 130 events left after all cuts. While other were mostly 0. The results were only a little different after including this. xsec error almost same as past results using GPET

10-20 % improvement on xsec and a few % on mass precision Can precision can be slightly improved if we fit over a wider range ? assuming we can neglect the H*WW bump beyond 160 GeV 500 GeV, Zee (-0.8,+0.3) fit in 100 – 250 GeV (c.f. 100-160 GeV) Sig + BG BG Signal BG only Signal only xsec error (%) mass error (MeV) (-0.8,+0.3) narrow wide 500GeV Zmm 6.95% 6.50% 474 468 Zee 9.89% 7.86% 1540 Total 5.69% 5.01% 453 448 (+0.8,-0.3) 8.36% 7.27% 613 572 9.85% 1510 1530 6.37% 5.33% 568 536 10-20 % improvement on xsec and a few % on mass precision Then I added all other BG and sig processes that hhave been generated as samples, even though I presumed them to be not important for Zmumu analysis at 250 GeV. Plans for Higgs Recoil Sudy The importance of recoil mass measurement (both leptonic and hadronic) for H20 scenario has been emphasized. improving leptonic recoil at 500 GeV AND beginning on hadronic recoil may have higher priority than further improving precision of leptonic recoil at 250 (350) GeV ??? at least, these need to be done in parallel. Plan: Investigate Higgs decay mode dependence (= systematic errors) for 250 GeV using high stat samples just about done (?) generate higher statistics sample for 350 and 500 GeV then use these to further improve precision for leptonic channel as well as do ZZ fusion analysis at 500 GeV Study systematic error from beam spectrum  need much time Begin hadronic recoil at 500 GeV personally feel this is a priority strategy : for now carry out same method as what Miyamoto-san did for Snowmass and investigate Higgs decay mode dependence the same way as I did for (1) Then I added all other BG and sig processes that hhave been generated as samples, even though I presumed them to be not important for Zmumu analysis at 250 GeV. I wanted to check I didn’t msis anything. I almost didn’t miss anything, except for WW_sl, Some of the quarks may have decayed secondarily into muons, and I left it out. There are about 130 events left after all cuts. While other were mostly 0. The results were only a little different after including this.

Immediate Plans Further Investigation of Higgs decay mode dependence (= systematic errors) for 250 GeV using high stat samples improve isolated lepton finder : incorporate Mrec requirement when selecting best lepton pair Add Hγγ mode analysis Hadronic lepton recoil at 500 GeV currently only starting….. (3) Think of further strategies to improve leptonic recoil precision Then I added all other BG and sig processes that hhave been generated as samples, even though I presumed them to be not important for Zmumu analysis at 250 GeV. I wanted to check I didn’t msis anything. I almost didn’t miss anything, except for WW_sl, Some of the quarks may have decayed secondarily into muons, and I left it out. There are about 130 events left after all cuts. While other were mostly 0. The results were only a little different after including this.

ECM= 350 GeV : (- 0.8, + 0.3) BG level fluctuation is controlled by fitting recoil mass over a wide range (100 – 160 GeV) an improvement from previous studies BG level is usually fixed for Toy MC (optimistic scenario) xsec error is about 10 % worse if we float BG (pessimistic scenario) not a big degradation since I fit recoil mass spectrum over a wide range GOOD Example: Now here is the plot for the fitted recoil mass including all signal and BG samples listed earlier, and after implementing all the cuts. Prevention of signal bias i.e. Higgs decay mode dependence the “traditional” dptbal ( = |Pt,dl | - |Pt,γ| ) cut for removing 2f BG (γ back-to back w.r.t. di-lepton) caused signal bias (esp. First I select muon pairs based on ratio of deposit in calorimeter wrt to total energy, opposite charge, and track quality. Than I pick out the best muon pair candidates base on how close their inv mass is to real Z mass Next , comes final selection for recoil mass analysis. Here, in the order that these arei implemented I require inv mass to be between 86 and 95 GeV, Then recoil mass to be between 115 and 140 GeV Then PT of dilepton system to be between 10 GeV and 70 geV Then acoplanarity to be between 0.2 and 3 then cosine of Z production angle to be smaller than 0.91, to cut out very forward events characteristic of BG processes, Then I calculate efficieny by counting events in signal region of 123 and 135 geV Recoil mass is calculated taking into account beam x angle of 14 mrad. Last week I received a comment from Kurata san about why I have this lower limicoplanarity Ithe reason is that for some Bgprocesses, teher is a peak at very small cop values, although for the dominant 2f_Z_l, peak is at aroudn pai. However I have doubts as to whether this cut is really necessary, when I already have the other cuts before it. experimented with the outcome s when I take away the lower limit, and when I take away the cop cut altogether. I also experimented with widening the inv maass cut window. Currently converging towards a full set of statistical error study results optimized data selection method for each of the 12 scenarios (3 ECM x 2 leptonic channels x 2 polarizations) in aim of best xsec and mass precision Removed systematic bias due to method of fitting or data selection
