This Day in History Sept 19th, 1776 The Second Continental Congress changed the name of the nation to the United States of America, from the United Colonies.

This Day in History Sept 22, 1862 President Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, proposing to free all slaves of rebel states as of Jan. 1, 1863.

Chap 11 Civil War

I. Fighting Begins b. South’s Advantages North’s Advantages Generals Defend. Washington D.C. nearby Passion- Independence. North’s Advantages Man power- 2 to 1. More railroads Factories- 5 to 1. Stronger economy

C. North Strategies Anaconda Plan- squeeze life out of CSA Navy- Blockade Coast Stay away from “Slave Issue” D. South Strategies Defensive War Get Foreign help

II. Early Battles A. 1861 First Bull Run (Virginia) 1. Union winning until Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s Virginian’s made a stand.

B. 1862 Anaconda Plan 1. April, Battle of Shiloh Grant and Buell defeat Johnston’s CSA (nearly 25,000 killed)

2. Naval “Blockade” captures New Orleans 3. March, Monitor (Union) vs. Merrimack (CSA) neither doing much damage.

4. March-July, Lee defeats McClellan, In Seven Days Battle 4. March-July, Lee defeats McClellan, In Seven Days Battle. Richmond protected.

III. The South Attacks A. Antietam, Maryland (Sept. 1862) Lee invades the North CSA orders found wrapped around some cigars. 12,000 killed in first three hours.- Battle a draw.

B. Emancipation Proclamation Free all enslaved people in rebellious states January 1, 1863. Keeps Foreign help for CSA away.

B. Battle of Fredericksburg (Dec. 1862) 1. Burnside attacked Lee. Union loses 13,000 while CSA only 5000.

IV. War Changes A. The Draft (Conscription) CSA- April 1862 USA- March 1863 “Copperheads”- Peace democrat against Lincoln and the War.

B. Chancellorsville May 1863 Joe Hooker vs. Lee. Lee Greatest Victory! (12 mile surprise attack in the woods)

3. Jackson shot in the left arm 3. Jackson shot in the left arm. (dies from wound, Lee’s most costly loss.)

C. Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) “The Turning Point” Lee’s Army looking for supplies.

D. Vicksburg Falls (July 4, 1863) Cuts the South in Half.

V. 1864 The South’s falling apart Grant placed in command of all Union forces.

B. Sherman’s march to the Sea. (Feb 1865) 1. “Scorched Earth”/ Total War from Atlanta to Savannah. (1st time civilian populations were targets)

VI. Election of 1864 and End of War a. Lincoln defeats McClellan (Copperheads), ending any hope of a negotiated peace for South. b. Lee, surrenders to Grant on April 9, 1865. at Appomattox Court House

c. Lincoln’s death 1. April 14, 1865 Lincoln shot by John Wilkes Booth.
