Reading As Inquiry CH. 2

Motives for Reading Comprehend Information Collect information Analyze an issue or an argument Describe a writer’s choices Reading is a process in which all meaning resides in the text and the reader’s job is merely to find it?

Reading Process Linear- information flows from the text to the reader (p.43) Recursive- information is a two way transaction between the reader and text; reader interprets, reflects questions information, and writes while reading (p.44) Dialectical Thinking- back and fourth movements between creative & critical thoughts trying to answer questions a reader might encounter

Reading “Images” Look closely- appeal to sight Find the subject- particular visual subject Understand context & genre- interpretation of image What’s the story? Interaction of words & pictures Inquiry based writing & reading should begin with a sense of wonder; not “What should I say?” but “What do I think?”& “What does this mean to me?”- apply this process to your writing assignements
