Sonke Gender Justice: Mobilising Men for Gender Justice Dean Peacock Founder and Executive Director 1

Established in August 2006, with 100 women and men working together in South Africa, 20 African countries and across the world from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gugulethu, and Bushbuckridge to promote gender justice, democracy and human rights. 2

Community Education and Mobilisation Policy Development and Advocacy Sonke recognises that social change requires multifaceted approach and employs five programme areas: Community Education and Mobilisation Policy Development and Advocacy Communications International Programmes Organisational Development Research and M&E 3

High levels of men’s violence against women, men and children, HIV and AIDS, and social and structural drivers, including inequality, unemployment, and some men’s resistance to change. But also enormous potential and tradition of activism, change and commitment to human rights, including in our constitution.

Sonke workshops a starting point for community mobilisation and activism, not an end-goal

Community Mobilisation Case Studies

Equality Court Case against Julius Malema

Equality Court Case against Julius Malema

Challenging the Traditional Courts Bill Does the proposed policy respect and support individual rights? Does the policy incorporate lessons learned from evaluated interventions? If not, what are the hypothesized outcomes of the policy? What evidence is there to support this policy? Does the policy take into consideration an understanding of how manhood and womanhood are defined or socially constructed in a particular setting? Does the policy consider gender and masculinities in an analysis of social exclusion that takes into account the other realities, identities and difficulties in men’s and women’s lives?
