Who is Charles Darwin? Charles Darwin is best known for his theory of Evolution He began developing his theory at age 22 when he took a job as a naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle which sailed around the world on a 5 year journey Most of his observations were made on the Galapagos islands (chain of islands near the equator; just off west coast of South America) Here he noticed several species of animals that were unique to each island but had similar counterparts on the other islands

DARWIN’S MAIN POINTS

There is variation among species VARIATION: differences SPECIES: individuals that look alike and can mate to produce fertile offspring EXAMPLES: size, color, speed, beak shape, etc.

All living things struggle to survive There are many limitations to survival EXAMPLES: predation, availability of food & living space, disease, finding mating partners

Living things produce more offspring than can survive to ensure that some will survive Most will die before they reproduce

Nature favors those individuals that are better adapted to survive This is called NATURAL SELECTION Those individuals that do survive will likely reproduce & produce more offspring Increases the population
