However, just after 2100 a more serious eruption began causing the summit's icecap to melt and carry mud ,rocks and debris down the mountain at speeds of up to 30 miles (50 km) per hour down into Armero. Nevado del Ruiz The destruction in the 1845 eruption was devastating to the surrounding population. There were around 1000 people killed in the aftermath of the eruption.
