Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Erich Heckel

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff

Fritz Bleyl

Analysis & Discussion What are the similarities in all these pieces of work? What are the differences to the Der Blaue Reiter? What subject content is used here? How do you think this work has been created?

5 minutes Gather around the central table to learn about the SGRAFFITO technique and about NEGATIVE SPACE.

Then coat the entire side with black indian ink. 60 minutes Collect a laminated Die Brücke portrait along with a piece of A6 shiny paper and a black wax crayon. Completely cover the A6 paper on the shiny side in the black wax crayon Then coat the entire side with black indian ink. Dry this with a hairdryer. With the sgraffito tool, scratch away the wax to reveal the white paper. Whilst this activity takes place you will have your photograph taken by the teacher. You must convey an emotion/expression, perhaps one that describes you best.
