Presentation transcript:

Star Early Literacy PreTest Instructions For iPad users with the Star app Instructions take about 5 mins to go through. See the PreTest Instructions on the “Resources” page of the Star software (log in as a teacher) Cover or remove any materials on the walls, whiteboard, and other areas that might help students answer the test items. Note to Monitor: Placing a small sticker on the left mouse button helps students with accuracy of clicking the mouse. Read the notes here word for word. Teacher Talk: “Before we begin, let’s make sure everyone has done a few things: If you must use the lavatory, be sure to use it now before you begin the test. You should have some reading material to occupy you for when you are finished with the test. If you have nothing, you will need to remain quiet and seated as to not distract others who may still be testing. (When ready): “You are going to take a test called STAR Early Literacy. You will answer 27 or more questions on a computer. It will take about fifteen to twenty minutes to answer all of the questions. Do not worry if someone finishes the test before you because every test is different. Do not worry about how many questions you think you get right, or how many you think you get wrong. Everyone will probably miss some of the questions. Your job is to do the best you can.”

This is what a test question may look like. Listen to the question as it is read to you out loud. To hear the question again: • On the iPad: Tap Listen •(Point to the upper right corner to show students) Each question has three possible answers (shown at the bottom of the screen). Choose the one you think is the right answer to the question.

Tap your answer choice. A box appears around the answer you have chosen; this does not mean you have chosen the correct answer. Once you are satisfied with the answer you have chosen, enter your answer choice by tapping Next. After you have entered your answer to the question, the next question will appear on the screen.

If you see a picture of a clock at the top of the screen, time is almost up for that question. Choose your answer quickly. If you don’t choose an answer in time, the test will move on to the next question.

Before you take the test, you may have a training session or practice questions. The training questions look just like the real test, but only have one answer to choose. The practice questions look just like the real test. If you see this message during the training or practice questions, you should raise your hand and call the teacher or test monitor. He or she will know what to do.

When you finish answering the practice questions, the program will show you this message. The test will start automatically. Relax and get ready; the first question will come up soon. Keep answering the questions until the computer tells you that you have finished the test. If you don’t know the answer to a question, go ahead and choose what you think is the best answer. When you have finished the test, tell the teacher or test monitor that you are finished so the next student can get started. If you have any questions about this test, please ask them now. Once the test starts, the teacher or test monitor will not be able to tell you if you have picked the right answer. Have fun, and do your best!

THESE SLIDES WALK STUDENTS THROUGH LOGGING IN – THEY SHOULD DO THIS WITH YOU You may want to show where the link or icon is to get to your district’s Star website. These directions start on the first screen after you have navigated to the site. You can say whatever is appropriate here. Perhaps, “We will help you click on the website link.” “This is the first screen you should see.” (When teacher is ready) – Tap on the long box that says “Username” , enter your username. Then tap on the long box that says “Password”, enter your password.

Tap the test that you are going to take.

You will see a check mark next to the test you are going to take You will see a check mark next to the test you are going to take. Then tap next.

NOTE: Someone MUST set up the monitor password in the Renaissance Place software in order for this to not begin immediately. If you have not done this, the test will begin immediately with the practice questions or the instructional video. Please be sure to double check this before administering pretest instructions! The default is that there will be a monitor password. If you aren’t using a monitor password, hide the next slide and use this one. Teacher Talk:

When we are ready to begin the test, we will come to you and check that your name is in the black bar at the top of your screen. If this is NOT your name, please be sure to let us know right away. Once we put in the password, the test will start.” The default password is “admin” – your district may have changed this. Test monitors should be checking on the student name in the top, middle and that the test says ‘Star Early Literacy.’
