Chaac Rain God of the Yucatan Chaac Rain God of the Yucatan In times when there was drought or deluge Mayan religious leaders thought Chaac was displeased and needed sacrifices to appease the rain god. Usually women and child were used in the ceremony to ask forgiveness. This ritual was performed at a ceremonial cenote. The rain god of the Yucatan was the most important deity the Mayan people had to explain the rain cycle. Chaac was believed to control the water that came from the sky. DO NOT USE THIS SPACE: CUT OUT AFTER PRINTING Chaac is a god of the central Yucatan and there is many carvings and artifacts depicting the rain god, but not in areas where water is abundant so it is believed that Chaac was constructed to alleviate stress brought on by water shortages or storms. Chaac was only important in areasthat depended on rain for water needed to survive. In other areas Chaac possibly was constructed to elevate stress among the Mayan people. The belief in Chaac gave reason for the climate conditions in the Puuc area of the Yucatan. Bibliagraphy Coe,Michael 2005. The Maya. Thames and Hudson, New York
