Warm up Subtract. 7/8 – 4/8 12/16 – 9/16 8/12 – 7/12 9/11 – 4/11

In this lesson, you will learn how to subtract mixed numbers. Today’s Lesson In this lesson, you will learn how to subtract mixed numbers. Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz.

Subtracting mixed numbers To subtract mixed numbers, first subtract the fraction parts. Example: 7 3/12 – 5 2/12 = 2 2/12 Sometimes the second numerator is larger than the first. You may have to rename the number. example : 5 1/4 - 3 3/4. Make 5 1/4 into 4 5/4 by making a one from the 5 into 4/4. then subtract 4 5/4 – 3 3/4 = 1 2/4 = 1 1/2.

Practice! Subtract. Rename numbers if needed. 4 1/4 - 2 3/4 4 1/4 - 2 3/4 5 3/8 - 1 7/8 7 5/9 - 4 8/9 6 1/3 - 2 2/3 8 1/12 - 4 5/12

Problem 1 in 2014, phoenix had 8 2/12 inches of rain. Las Vegas had 4 3/12 inches of rain. How much more rain fell in phoenix?

Problem 2 ellen drank 3 1/4 bottles of water on Monday. She drank 1 3/4 bottles of water on Tuesday. How much more water did ellen drink on Monday?

Problem 3 in June, 5 2/6 inches of rain fell in Orlando. In may, 3 5/6 inches of rain fell. How much more rain did Orlando get in June than in may?

Lesson Wrap Up In this lesson, you learned how to subtract mixed numbers using a variety of methods. Reflection: How did you make sense of today’s lesson? Explain. Homework (12-9 Practice) for one “Paw Signature” and (12-9 Reteaching & Practice) if you want two “Paw Signatures.” Website for Practice: http://www.aaamath.com/fra66ex2.htm
