Chapter 7 Introduction to the Cell Section 7:1

I. Discovery A. Cells were found when the microscope was developed. 1. Anton Van Leevwenhoek – reconstructed the first microscope which was the link to all cell discoveries. Also the first to observe living micro-organisms. 2. Robert Hooke- first to see and identify a cell, cork, plant, dead.

5. Matthias Schleidan – stated that all plants are composed of cells. 3. Rudolf Virchow – stated that cells come from pre-existing cells. 4. Robert Brown – first to identify the nucleus. 5. Matthias Schleidan – stated that all plants are composed of cells. 6. Theodor Schwann – stated that all animals are composed of cells.

II. Cell Theory A. 3 parts 1. All living things are composed of one or more cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in an organism. 3. Cells come only from the reproduction of existing cells. III. Cell Diversity and organization A. Cells are not all alike. The division of labor among different cell types is called cell organization.

IV. Cell Diversity – Cells come in a variety of shapes, sizes and responsibilities. 1. Size - Most are only visible with a microscope and their size is limited by the ratio between outer surface area and their volume. 2. Shapes are extremely diverse and can also reflect it function.

VI. Internal organization A. Organelles 1. Organs in cells that performs specific functions. Very similar to organs in the human body.

VII Eukaryote A. Cells that contain a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane bound organelles VIII Prokaryotes A. Bacteria and Archaea cells that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane bound organelles
